Hawick club cards successful 2012 despite weather

It’s official: 2012 has been the wettest year for the last century. Unfortunately, this is not great for any sport, particularly golf, but thanks to our excellent green staff we have managed to keep our course open when others around have been closed.

And despite the adverse conditions, 2012 has been a successful year for Hawick Golf Club on all fronts.

In the gents’ section, the spoils of club champion went to Warren Renwick, who was among 33 different winners throughout the season, with good entries into all competitions. Congratulations to trophy winners and thank you to all those who supported the last year’s competitions. The club would also like to congratulate Alan Ballantyne, who won one of the few trophies that has eluded him over the years, the BGA Championship. The men’s team were also victorious in the BGA Summer league, beating Torwoodlee in a nail-biting play-off.

In the ladies’ section, Judith Anderson became Border county champion for an incredible ninth time, winning 4&2 in the final. Rhea Middlemass also did the club proud by winning the bronze championship, a tremendous effort as she is only ten-years-old. Congratulations also to Amy Martin, who reached the semi-finals. These are encouraging signs for the future of ladies’ golf at the club and really were great performances from the girls. In addition to her Border County champion crown, Judith also won the ladies’ championship for an incredible 19th time. Also a big thanks to the ladies’ section for their help in running the kids’ Christmas party and the family day.

We have also seen the junior academy go from strength to strength with more than 20 young golfers attending the Club Golf stage one coaching sessions and taking part in the Wee Wonders competitions. Thank you to resident club pro Keith Morgan for giving up his time to assist with the coaching and to all the other coaches and parent helpers for their efforts in ensuring the club has a bright future.

I would also like to thank honorary president George Rennie for all the unseen work he puts in at the club and his continual kind donations throughout 2012. And finally, a big thank you to all our members for their continued support, and hopefully we will see you all return this year.

Anyone interested in joining Hawick Golf Club should contact thesecetary@hawickgolfclub.com. All fees are payable on any Sunday in January from noon until 2pm at the club.
