All change for Rae but confidence still high

HAWICK co-driver Kevin Rae is hoping to guide David Bogie to a third successive victory in the Arnold Clark Thistle Hotel Snowman Rally this weekend.

But the four-time Scottish title-holders will have their work cut out after changing cars for this year’s championship.

Bogie will be behind the wheel of a newly-acquired Ford Focus WRC ’02, having retired his faithful Mitsubishi EVO 9 at the end of last season. The pair have been familiarising themselves with the ex-Colin McRae car and, in particular, the switch to left-hand drive.

Rae said: “Last year as Euan [Thorburn] got to grips with his car we struggled to match him time-wise with the Evo, so we thought it would be daft to start a new season on the back foot.

“With David trying to get used to the left-hand drive I’ll probably spend most of my time bouncing along on the verge. But seriously, it doesn’t make a big difference to me.”

Many are tipping Duns driver Thorburn for the championship. But Rae added: “I think everyone is seeing how long it took Euan to get used to the car last year and thinking it’ll be the same with David, but he’s jumped into strange cars in the past.”

The opening round of the championship takes place in Inverness tomorrow.
