WHILE the region has been battered by torrential rain and storms this week, locals should spare a thought for the people of Hawick’s twin town Bailleul.
The town in the north of France was struck by a mini-tornado on Sunday.
The tornado resulted in at least two minor injuries and caused extensive damage.
According to officials it “ripped roofs and verandas” along several streets, while a supermarket lost a wall.
The tornado, which was accompanied by thunderstorms, also caused a major power outage in the joint between Lille and Dunkirk. As a result, some 1,600 homes were without electricity.
