POLICE have this week moved to allay fears that a group of Romanian beggars was operating in the town.

Several traders moved beggars from shop fronts last week and police confirmed that two individuals of Romanian origin were stopped and searched. They were given advice to head back to Edinburgh, where they are believed to reside.

Local police inspector Carol Wood said: “There’s an increase in local officer presence on the High Street in Hawick over the festive season. If anyone has any concerns about begging they shouldn’t hesitate to report it to police.”
