Council vows to tackle Hornshole safety issues

TRAFFIC could soon be banned from using the western link from Hornshole onto the main road amid increasing safety concerns.

Fears have been expressed about cars and heavy goods vehicles trying to access the A698 Hawick to Denholm road from the right hand junction.

Local councillor Stuart Marshall said: “I fear if nothing is done soon to rectify several issues on the approach to this very busy stretch of road then a serious accident will be inevitable.”

The issue has been raised a number of times at Burnfoot Community Council.

Councillor Marshall and Robbie Yates, from Scottish Borders Council’s environment and infrastructure department, visited the junction recently. A council spokesperson said: “Although there had been no injury accidents recorded in the vicinity in recent years which implicated the junction, Mr Yates acknowledged that the visibility on the westernmost arm is severely restricted.”

It was agreed that the local authority would consider the prohibition of all traffic from the bridge accessing the A698 via the western link.

It was also agreed that signage in and around the bridge itself would be improved. Councillor Marshall added: “This in my mind is a step in the right direction but action must be taken soon before someone is badly hurt.”
