Upbeat coach eyes new season with optimism

HAWICK High’s under-15 netball side have a bright future ahead of them, that’s according to coach Gillian Thomson.

They have a 24-strong squad of girls for the Border League and 10 who will be competing in the Scottish Cup.

Thomson said: “I really believe we’ve a good chance of doing well next season. It means a lot of hard word and dedication but I’ve no doubt both my teams will go far.”

Meanwhile, for the first time, the Borders will have a new Borders district under-15 squad, and taking the reigns are Peebles coach Linda Nicholson and her talented coaching team.

All four secondary schools who participate in the Aitken and Turnbull Border League, namely Hawick, Earlston, Berwickshire and Peebles, were asked to forward eight girls for selection at trials in Peebles, and the Hawick players were: Chloe Thomson, Georgia Kirkpatrick, Iben McMillan, Cassie Murdoch and Rachel Jack (all S3), Ruathy Murray, Niamh Sharp and Caitlin Brown (all S2).

Coach Thomson added: “Congratulations to all five of our S3 girls who were selected – it is just reward for all their hard work. A special mention also to my S2s – heads up as you will get the chance again next year.”

The girls will now train with the district squad with the aim of making the final team of 12 in September.
