Try-scorer Hogg stakes claim for starting berth

YOUNG tyro Stuart Hogg has thrown down the gauntlet for the coming campaign after scoring for Glasgow Warriors in their victory over Newcastle Falcons, writes Gavin Gibbon.

Despite a busy summer at the youth World Cup in Italy, the former Greens star was selected as a replacement in Sean Lineen’s squad for last Friday’s pre-season match against the Falcons.

And while he admitted he didn’t expect to play much of a part in proceedings, an early injury to Peter Murchie saw him thrust into the action after half-an-hour.

He said: “I was told earlier in the week that I was going to be involved and I was very pleased that my pre-season work had paid off. The game tempo was unbelievably quick and the boys were looking sharp.”

And things got better for the teenager when he cut a short line off Duncan Weir, broke a tackle and scored in the corner, helping his side to a 17-7 win.

Looking ahead to their next warm-up match against English giants Sale, he added: “We deserved to win and that gives us great confidence going into the Sale game.”
