Win or bust for YM as Peebles come calling

“IF WE lose on Saturday, we can kiss the league goodbye.”

Those were the words of Hawick YM coach Jammy McFarlane as he prepares his side for arguably their biggest game of the season.

Title challengers Peebles are the visitors to Mansfield Haugh today.

The men from The Gytes, who edged the Redskins 32-29 on their own patch earlier in the season, are currently second in Championship ‘B’, 14 points ahead of the YM but having played two more games.

And McFarlane admitted a further defeat would prove fatal to their ambitions of clinching league glory.

He said: “Everybody knows how important it is. We’ve had one eye on this match for a great number of weeks.”

However, the YM haven’t been helped by the weather. McFarlane’s men last played a league match back on November 3 when they narrowly beat Howe of Fife at home.

Since then they have had run-outs in the RBS Cup and Border League.

But they have been desperate to return to league duty and finally get their chance today.

McFarlane said: “I don’t think we’ve played a league game for 15 weeks. The matches against Hawick and Kelso were an inconvenience, all I wanted was to get back to league business.

“They’ve [Peebles] hit some form, but we’ve known they’re a good side all season.”
