Hawick put their BT Cup final defeat behind them and notched a confident performance at the Berwick Sevens on Sunday, bowing out in the semi-finals, writes Alexander McLeman.
The Berwick event opted for a 12-team format with four pools of three teams, the winners from each pool progressing to the semis.
Hawick, fielding several players who were involved in the cup final defeat to Boroughmuir, were pooled with the hosts Berwick and Edinburgh University.
The Greens squeezed past Berwick 14-22 then hammered Edinburgh Uni 43-7 thanks to scores from Matt Douglas, Finley Simpson, Scott McLeod and John Coutts and a double from Michael Robertson.
After a fairly even first half against Edinburgh Accies in the semis, which ended 5-5 thanks to a Sean Fairbairn touchdown cancelling out an Alex Godsmark score, John Coutts put the Greens 12-5 ahead early in the second half before the City side scored 19 unanswered points to take a 24-12 lead. Mike McKee crashed over late for the Greens but the Edinburgh side held on for a 24-19 victory.
“We played for ourselves after an emotional finals day,” said Douglas. “We felt that we let a lot of people down with our performance against Boroughmuir so we wanted to make sure we brought some pride back to the shirt. In the end we were all pretty pleased with our performance.”
Gala extended their lead at the top of the Kings of the Sevens table with a 30-17 victory over Accies in the final.
