Berwick results keep Kings tournament alive

The 2014 Kings of the Sevens tournament was sparked to life again last weekend with some surprise results seeing the field close in on leaders Melrose.

At Mansfield Park on Saturday the Greenyards outfit ended a 40 year wait with a stylish showing throughout the day to lift the Hawick 7s trophy for the first time since 1974.

Melrose win Hawick Sevens.

Melrose win Hawick Sevens.

Wins over Hawick YM, Peebles and Gala on their way to beating Edinburgh Accies 24-17 in the final gave them an 11 point lead after three events in the Kings of the 7s, having accrued 25 points overall, well on their way to breaking their own 65 points record for the 10 events in the series.

Edinburgh Accies came from behind to beat the hosts and stop them from taking their seventh Hawick 7s title on the trot.

Anyone expecting more of the same at Scremerston on Sunday however were sadly mistaken.

At the Berwick Sevens it was Gala who caused an upset in form which led to a convincing 36-7 win in the final over Jed-Forest to go to within eight points of Melrose.

Selkirk knocked out Melrose in the quarter final whilst hosts Berwick lost to local rivals Alnwick in the first round and once again Hawick failed at a Berwick tournament to an Edinburgh University team.

The tournament also saw Jed twins Lewis (Jed) and Gregor Young (Gala) going up against each other for the first time ever on opposing sides.

Next weekend’s tournaments at Langholm (Saturday) and Peebles (Sunday) are likely to throw up some equally exciting results.
