Rocky Johnstone has showered praise on the President’s Ten side he coached to victory in Saturday’s Hawick Harlequins 10s tournament.
The team, which comprised mostly Greens players, only condeded three tries throughout the fast-paced tourney, which also included defending champions Selkirk, Hawick YM, Linden, Gala YM, Broughton and Peebles.
“The boys played extremely well and deserved to win,” said Rocky. “But although there was a difference in physicality with them being bigger and stronger than the others, they faced some great players and I was particularly impressed with the Quins and YM.”
In Pool one, the President’s Ten beat Broughton, Quins and Peebles. Quins defeated Peebles and Broughton, and the last game saw Peebles beat Broughton.
In Pool 2, Hawick YM defeated Gala YM, Selkirk and the Linden. Gala YM beat Selkirk and drew with Linden. The last pool game saw Linden defeat Selkirk.
In the semi-finals, the President’s Ten saw off Gala YM 42-0, and in the most exciting game of the day, the YM defeated the Quins in the dying minutes by 26 points to 21.
The President’s Ten took the spoils in the final by 33-12.
