BROTHERS Gary and Liam Berridge shared some sibling rivalry as they took the top two spots in the 127th Tradesmen’s Handicap at Hawick Moor on Friday.

The betting throughout the day for the ‘Big Yin’ had all been about the hot favourite Everyday I’m Shuffling, with Liam in the saddle, gambled from 2/1 to 4/6, with last year’s winner Volare, Little Man and Te Aroha also being well supported.

Volare set the early pace, followed by My Way, under the guidance of Gary, and Little Man, with the favourite some ten lengths behind as they reached the bell with one lap to go.

Going down the back straight the order stayed more or less the same, but on the straight My Way went on from the tiring Volare. Everyday I’m Shuffling made great strides, but Gary had done enough on My Way, trained in Langholm by Tony Irvine and his wife Linda for owners R&N Hyslop, to hold on and win by half a length from brother Liam.

The first race was run over a mile and saw Hawick’s Sam’s Secret come home with a very easy win over Irish runner Back On Top with Band Of Gold third.

Race two saw the Irish pick up the first of their five winners over the two days’ racing with Cruise Ship getting the better of Burnie Brae to win by half a length, with Popstar coming in third.

The final race on Friday was run over 1¼ miles, with eight going to post. But the writing was on the wall a long way out, and Catch a Cloud took the victory with plenty in hand.

The Saturday underfoot conditions changed with the rain, but the fantastic racing continued. The seven-furlong race was first, with four going to post and the spoils going to Burnie Brae, who reversed the form from Friday with Cruise Ship. Backontop finished third.

The Buccleuch Handicap, run over 1½ miles, was next up with six runners. Irish raider Grey But Stable led from the start, while once again warm favourite Everyday I’m Shuffling just failed to get up on the line.

The mile race saw Catch a Cloud complete a weekend double by putting his six rivals to the sword with relative ease.

In the final race, Little Man got up close to home to take the spoils and give the Irish their fifth weekend winner.

The ceremonial races saw wins for Stephen Gray, Grant Huggan (3), Josh Farmer, Ben Graham and Karen Scott.
