BUCCLEUCH: Last Monday saw the men suffering one of their heaviest defeats of the season when losing all five rinks and by 105 shots to 53 in their penulitmate league game at Newtown.

The seniors hung in all the way before slipping to a 62-60 defeat in a cracker of a game at league leaders Melrose/Earlston on the Melrose green last Tuesday. Best trio for the visitors were B. Rorrison, M. Bell and C. Birchley (skip) 18-11.

Saturday’s annual visit from South Tyneside saw 48 bowlers take to the green, and following a closely-fought and good-natured contest, it was the visitors who won by 113 shots to 97. Then, around 60 enjoyed a two-course meal in the clubrooms. Buccleuch’s sweep winners were K. Neil, J. Riley, W. Walker and C. Birchley (skip).

HAWICK: With the national championships being played at Ayr last week, the club’s seniors were the only team in competitive action, emerging winners by 55 shots to 48 following a keenly-contested match at Gala. Tops for the Teries were Wilson Blaikie, Ronnie Graham and J. H. Reilly (skip). Details: M. Blyth 6 J. H. Reilly 24; I. Niven 12 R. McDonald 11; L. Thin 16 T. Anderson 6; T. Scott 14 G. Lyall 14.

The ‘A’ team’s home match at home to Gala Waverley last Monday night was cancelled due to the host green being unplayable.

WILTON: The ‘A’ team’s Knockout Cup first round match at home to Jedburgh last Friday was abandoned after 12 ends due to heavy rain – and resulted in a 67 shots to 59 victory for the visitors. Top squad for the hosts comprised Alistair Taylor, Bruce Millar, John Smyth and Colin Sutherland (skip). Details: S. Anderson 9 E. Lindores 14; C. Sutherland 19 R. Lindores 7; C. Miller 13 G. Last Monday’s 17-end David Lightbody-sponsored Border League match saw the men edged out by 79 shots to 75 at home to Selkirk. NATIONAL FINALS: Last week’s Bowls Scotland national finals on the Northfield green, Ayr, saw Wilton’s senior quartet of June Robertson, Joan Kyle, Betty Gibson and Irene Bennett (skip) tasting defeat at the hands of Cardonald. In the ladies’ senior singles, the Hawick club’s Alison Clarkson lost out in the third round. Last Tuesday, the gents’ senior four of Alistair Taylor, Michael Notman, Rikky Paterson and Bruce Millar (skip), Wilton, won their first match against Stonehaven but were defeated on Wednesday by Upper Cowal. In the ladies’ fours, Hawick’s Irene Wilson, Mary Riddell, Pat Brady and Joyce Dickey (skip) were beaten by Galston after an extra end.
