TWO young Hawick jockeys raced to victory at Alnwick on Sunday when the Northern Area point-to-point season finally kicked off.

Although the event was being held seven weeks later than scheduled on testing ground at the rearranged West Percy fixture, for both Teri riders Blair Campbell and Tom Hamilton it brought first wins.

Owned and trained by Dan Ockenden, Blair rode Who’slaughingnow in the NFU Mutual two and a half mile Open Maiden Race, and had to knuckle down to beat a late challenge from Buywise by a head.

He told the Hawick News: “The race went well and the horse jumped well and travelled very well. That was my first ride of the season and it was great to ride my first winner for my new boss,”

And also celebrating fresh success was 17-year-old high school pupil Tom Hamilton, on board gelding Raid Stane for Galashiels trainer Katie Scott, in the Stockdale & Reid Solicitors Open Maiden Race. Tom stated: “He’s a nice horse who travelled and jumped well and hopefully will improve further. It was great to get my first winner for 2013 and second career win.”

Both jockeys will be back in the saddle at the meet at Overton on Sunday.
