Two Hawick Cycling Club riders made their mark at the recent Fenwick APR which took place just north of Kilmarnock.
Gordon Jackson and Tom Harkness made the two-hour journey to saddle up for the 34-mile event, run over two 17-mile laps, with a field of 50 racers.
The event, which was held over a very hilly course with two tough climbs, started at a hectic pace with the younger riders trying to split the peloton, which soon had riders dropping off the bunch. The pace settled down after eight miles as the competitors battled a strong headwind.
As the second lap started the main field was down to 17 riders with Jackson still in the bunch. On the penultimate climb, a group of five jumped clear leaving a group of 12, including Jackson, chasing. As the race hit the one-mile climb to the finish, the five were still clear and stayed away to contest the win.
Veteran Jackson proved the strongest of the 12 chasers to come sixth and maintain the Hawick club’s fine start to the season. In his first race of the year, Harkness rode well to finish 30th.
