Take a Risk wins the Eskdale Plate at Langholm Flapping meeting

The two-day meeting at Langholm was once again blessed with fantastic weather, and although the fields were not the largest this season, the huge crowd on the Friday and the usual flapping worthies on the Saturday were treated to fantastic racing .

Friday’s racing got off to a rather sombre start. In the first race, which saw four runners going to post for The Mercury Stakes run over six furlongs, Ve-Va fell at the final bend when challenging for the lead and unfortunately had to be put down by the on-course vet who was quickly on the scene. Kalahari Desert ran on well to collar Eye Candy who tired and was just pipped for second by the fast finishing Woodhall Taraken .

Race two was the main event of the day. The Eskdale Plate, run over seven furlongs with a £1,000 first place, saw a rather disappointing field of four take their chance.

Just A Joker was a warm favourite with money coming in for Just A Reiver just before the off. From the start Just A Reiver set a fast pace but he ran wide at the first bend giving the lead to Take A Risk in the hands of Sean Huggan who kicked on and was well clear coming into the straight and won with plenty in hand to give George Murphy and his connections an easy victory. Just A Joker was a disappointing second and Mr. Mo finished back in third.

Six runners took their chance in the 1 1/4 mile race, a very open contest with money going on Long Journey the Irish raider and Isobar. But Andrew Fairley, riding Motivator, had other ideas as he led for almost the complete race to win from fast finishing My Bett, with Isobar third.

The Innkeeper’s Plate, run over one-mile, was the last race of the day and it was a cracker. Seven runners set off and the Langholm-trained Moodla Point looked all over the winner entering the straight but the Hawick-trained Full Of Magic, who had been slightly left at the start, flew home to just get there from Moodla Point with Jimmy Choo running well back in third.

n Saturday’s racing kicked off with Take A Risk completing a weekend double, winning the one-mile race, with four going to post, from Jacob’s Well and My Bett .

Race two, the six-furlong event, saw two of Friday’s winners take each other on in the shape of Kalahari Desert and Full Of Magic, but Just A Joker made up for Friday’s disappointment to hold on from Full Of Magic and Kalahari Desert in third .

The 1 1/2 mile race was next and the five runners were all previous winners apart from Rock On Tommy who had three second places in this his first season. And it was to be his day with a well deserved victory from Scobie and Acanacanoe

The last race saw Moodla Point make up for the previous day as he ran on well in the five runner no winners race, ran over seven furlongs, to just get up from She’s A Diamond and Trick or Treat.
