Honours even as ladies’ derby clash ends in draw

BUCCLEUCH: The ladies were away to local rivals and neighbours Hawick last Tuesday, and the match could not have been closer, with both rinks all square going into the last end. With the two sides winning one each by just one shot, they shared the points at 2.5 each. Buccleuch’s winning rink comprised M. Johnson, F. Spalding, C. Stitt and M. Martin (skip) 14-13.

LAST Wednesday, the men were at home to Peebles in the league, and hung on for an 82 points to 76.5 victory. Best for the hosts were K. Neil, T. Cairns, K. Graham and K. Lyle (skip).

HAWICK: The seniors played Peebles last Tuesday at home and recorded a good win by 58 shots to 54. The turning point in this game was the seven shots that Alec Wilson’s rink scored in the final end. Up until then Peebles were leading across the board.

LAST Wednesday, the ‘B’ team were up against a strong Gala Waverley side who won well by 77 shots to 49.

THE ‘A’ team travelled to Gala for a Division 2 fixture, and after a very close game it was the hosts who emerged winners by 78 shots to 71.

WILTON: The five-rink ‘A’ team played host to league leaders Melrose last Wednesday night, and it was the homesters who started the better of the two sides and raced into a 56 shots to 29 lead after seven ends.

With the same amount of heads completed again, the visitors had closed the deficit to 22 shots (84-62), and over the closing part of the 
17-end contest they side outscored the Wiltonians 15-13, but it was not enough to make an impact on the overall result and the West Stewart Place side emerged victorious with a tremendous 97 shots to 77 victory.

Leading the way for the Teries were ‘sweep’ winners Bruce Millar, Ryan Brady, Alan Waugh and Colin Sutherland (skip) who finished 20 shots up.

THE four-rink ‘B’ team took on Waverley in a league match recently, winning by 20 shots. Victories were secured in two of the four individual contests with Elliot Halliday, Gordon Fraser, Kenny Hill and John Smyth (skip) the top performers with a 21-shot victory.

The six-rink Border team bounced back from their defeat last week to gain victory over Midlothian at Earlston on Saturday. Local players in the Hamilton Trophy team were Alan Brady (Wilton) and Martin Christy (Hawick).

The Border Under-25 side completed their league fixtures on Sunday at East Linton where they lost out by 10 shots to East Lothian on a tricky green. The Borderers emerged with great credit, though, and local lads in the team were Simon Spalding (Hawick) and Michael Smyth and Ryan Brady (Wilton).
