A BUMPER entry heralded the first gents’ competition of the season on Saturday at Hawick Golf Club, when numbers for the Texas scramble were up by an encouraging 53 per cent on the same tournament last season, with 49 participants this year.

The winning quartet of Harry Forsyth, Corey Wilson, Martin Christy and Doug Crawford found the format to their liking as they notched a superb 12 threes on their scorecard for a total of 55.5. Runners-up were B. George, K. Yellowlees, W. Murdie, A. Caldwell 58.1; with G. Ford, F. Brunton, K. Murphy, D. Cowan in third place on 58.5.

This Saturday sees the annual Tri-am tournament for the Plug McColm Trophy.

The seniors’ Summer League got off to a blistering start with nine players from a field of 25 returning scores better than par. Unfortunately, the weather didn’t match the standard of golf with the competition played in misty conditions. John McFarlane scored a fantastic 45 stableford points to win, with Tam Glendinning second on 42. David Howden and Steve Mather shared third place on 41.

The Ladies’ Salver competition, postponed from Sunday, April 6, will be played on Sunday, April 13.

The club is holding a quiz night on Friday, April 18, at 7pm. More info from 870220.
