WHILE Bradley Wiggins, Mark Cavendish and company tackle the Tour de France, one Hawick teenager is currently blazing a trail through the Basque region.
High school pupil Connor Telfer is part of a six-man Scotland Under-18 team who are based just outside Bilbao in the city of Durango, Spain.
Dad Colin told the Hawick News: “He was really excited about going out there, although he was obviously nervous as well, but he’s been in touch with text messages and he’s thoroughly enjoying the experience.”
Training and racing against teams from the Basque region, the 16-year-old, who was part of the Scottish side that faced England, Wales and Ulster in a three-day road race event in Perthshire last summer, took part in his first race on Sunday and finished 35th out of 80 riders.
Being based close to the corner of the Pyrenees, Connor and the Scottish boys are also coming into regular contact with members of the professional Euskaltel-Euskadi team, who train in that area.
Connor’s own training back home involves at least two hours cycling every day, with three long days of four to five hours.
