Once again the Border Curling Development Group (BCDG) are celebrating a cash boost from the Big Lottery and are inviting members of the public to share in their success.
Along with Border Ice Rink the group have secured a grant of just over £9,000 which will enable them to introduce the sport of curling to people of all ages and abilities as well as continuing to develop their skills in the future.
Development officer and treasurer of the BCDG, Helen Mathieson, was part of the hard working team behind the funding bid and is delighted that the group can continue to grow the support in the area.
“It’s absolutely great news for the sport of curling here in the Borders,” she said.
“This support from Big Lottery is enabling the Rink to people a sponsored Try Curling opportunity, in association with our governing body the Royal Caledonian Curling Club and will allow the Group to support Ice for Beginners and Club players to learn and improve their curling.”
Curling is currently enjoyed by over 500 Borderers at the Kelso based venue.
“It is a friendly, inclusive sport and has many benefits to health and fitness,” added Mrs Mathieson.
“Curling can be played by any age or ability and is a low impact sport. It is good exercise and encourages lots of competitive banter and teamwork on and off the ice as well as being relatively inexpensive.”
As a result of the funding BCDG are once again launching their highly popular Come and Try sessions, the first of which will be held at Border Ice Rink on Friday, October 2 (2.30pm + 3.30pm) and Saturday, October 3 (9.30am + 10.30am) at a cost of just £3 per person. Qualified and friendly coaches will be on hand to help and encourage all.
All you need is a clean pair of trainers to change into (preferably with a thick sole) and layers of loose clothing for comfort and ease of movement.
Anyone interested should contact the ice rink on 01573 224774. Further dates are advertised at www.bordericerink.co.uk at coaching.
The Junior Club for coaching is Monday night (4pm-5pm) while Saturday morning coaching caters for juniors/adults from 9.30am most weeks. Follow up sessions are also available.
