Brady and Macdougall to lock horns

THE final of the gents’ championship will be held tonight (Friday) between Alan Brady and Chris Macdougall. It is hoped that the junior final will also be staged.

The final session of games in the Pub and Club League were contested on Sunday and with only three points separating four of the six teams it was all to play for and the league title was up for grabs.

On rink one, the Waverley Bar took on the Harry Bell squad and the result was a win by 13 shots to 8 for the Waverley squad. The G. Smith-led quartet took on the Wilton four skipped by R. Paterson, with Smith’s squad winning eight of the 14 ends to record a win by 16 shots to 14, 10 points to 6. The final contest was between Mansfield Bar and Lodge 111, with the Mansfield men winning 9 of the 14 ends to record a win by 16 shots to 8.

Final positions in the league were as follows: G. Smith, 85½, -¼; Mansfield Bar, 84½, +5 ¼; Wilton, 83½, +19; Lodge 111, 83, +2½; Waverley Bar, 73½, -8; H. Bell, 70, -11.

Tomorrow (Saturday), sees the final open tournament of the season, which will be played as a round-robin of three games of six ends, with respotted jacks for burnt ends. Play starts at 10.45am for sections one and two and 11.30am for sections three and four, with the winner of each section contesting the semi-finals.

The draw is: Section one – M. Upton, A. Borthwick, Kelso (2) and M. Hogarth. Section two – D. Macdougall, Kelso (1), C. Macdougall and P. McCartney. Section three – J. Forrest, A. J. Kyle, L. Lavin and T. Ramsay. Section four – Kelso (3), A. Brady, C. Sutherland and J. Dickey.

The tournament is being sponsored by Paul Burton Wines, George Brown (Joiners) and the Station Bar.

Saturday’s second round of School Superbowl games at the leisure centre saw four rinks from Wilton, Burnfoot, and Denholm/Hobkirk playing three games of five ends, with the winning school, Hobkirk, on 7 points, +2 shots; 2, Wilton, 6, +8; 3, Wilton Co-optimists, -4; 4, Burnfoot, 5, -6.

The final will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at 9am, and all are welcome to come along to watch Stirches and Denholm/Hobkirk schools.
