HAWICK sealed their place in the final of this season’s Scottish Cup with an outstanding win against Aberdeenshire side Mintlaw Academy at Meggetland.

However, it was by no means the easy ride suggested by the scoreline, with both sides contributing fully to a game which was ultimately decided by the ruthless finishing and determined defending of the Teri girls.

Carly Noble epitomised this with a first-half hat-trick of long-range strikes. Further goals were added by Brogan Anderson, who curled a fantastic free-kick into the top corner, and Carly McAllan pounced on a loose ball to steer home number five before the interval. And Brogan Anderson and Lauren MacKenzie both came close to stretching their advantage.

If the first half had demonstrated Hawick’s att-acking verve, it was their defensive capabilities which came to the fore in the second period. Mintlaw, buoyed by several sets of fresh legs, came out with every apparent intention of clawing back the deficit, but the Teri defence held firm time and time again.

Despite all their possession and pressure, Mintlaw were held at arm’s length, and the closest they came was when Naomi Swan and Kirsten Mitchell combined to close out a near- post chance.

Hawick, despite seeing less of the ball, created the better chances. Meghan Joyce-Anderson charged down a penalty-box clearance only to see the ball ricochet narrowly over the bar, while it took a crowd of Mintlaw defenders to stop Alex Hay from increasing her side’s lead.
