RELEGATION-threatened Hawick Legion have received a boost behind the scenes with the addition of Brian McConnell to the coaching staff.
The former Legion stalwart and East of Scotland player brings vital experience to the side as they bid to stave off relegation from the Border Amateur ‘A’ Division.
Co-manager Billy Brunton said: “Brian is well respected and since coming on board he has put a smile back on the players’ faces at training. He’s given everyone a lift, which is a great thing for the club.”
The club has also been lifted by last Saturday’s win over fellow basement boys Jed Legion, although as they sit second bottom of the league, there is still plenty of work to do to avoid dropping down to Division ‘B’.
But Brunton believes they can do the job and said: “I was over the moon with our win over Jed Legion.
“They were a place above us in the league and needed points as much as we did so both sides had a lot to play for.
“I thought we played really well, scored good goals and thoroughly deserved our win.”
Tomorrow, Legion travel to face Newtown, who are also in the lower half of the league.
It’s another massive match for both sides and this isn’t lost on Brunton, who added: “We got our confidence up in beating Jed so hopefully the boys will be wanting the ball against Newtown.
“They’re a difficult side to beat at home so it looks like it’s going to be some game.”
