Hawick Golf Club will have to wait another year if their team is to win an eighth Border title after suffering a 4-2 defeat to Torwoodlee in the final at the weekend.

The match was reduced to one session and moved to Selkirk Golf Club after heavy over night rain made Cardrona unplayable.

The Teri outfit, who were chasing their third championship in a row, couldn’t get off the mark and Torwoodlee were soon well on their way to the title as they racked up 2.5 points out of the first three matches. And with only 3.5 points needed to win the championship, success was beyond Hawick’s reach as they went down 4-2.

However, the Hawick club will look to banish any memories of the Torwoodlee reverse when seven Vertish Hill players tee off in the season-ending Border Matchplay Championship over The Roxburghe course, tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday.

With just under half the 16-strong field from Hawick, it is hoped one of the Teries will bring the curtain down on his season with a trophy win.
