Hawick Harlequins are close to appointing a new coaching team, according to club president Drew Turnbull, writes Alexander McLeman.

Quins, who finished bottom of RBS East Regional One with just two wins from a miserable 18-match campaign, are also set to bring in two assistants as part of a new “pyramid coaching structure”.

Turnbull said: “We had a difficult year last year, a complete disaster by our standards.

“Players were not committing to the side at training or in games, which made life for our coach Timmy [Pretswell] very difficult. In some training sessions we only had five boys down which you can’t do anything with.”

The president also said that an announcement on the new coaches could be made as early as this weekend, and he was confident that this new structure would prevent a similarly disappointing season in 2014/15.

Turnbull also paid tribute to Pretswell who becomes the club’s new vice-president.

“Timmy has given many years to this club and I’m very pleased that he has accepted my offer and will continue his association with the Quins.”
