Waverley ‘deserved better result’ against the league leaders

Although ending up on the wrong end of the result, Waverley gave table-topping Gala Fairydean Rovers a real run for their money in this Border Amateur ‘A’ Division match. The Wilton Lodge Park men, however, got off to a stuttering start by conceding a goal in the fourth minute.

Player/manager Neal McConnell, who was having his first outing for some time, brought down an attacker in the box. A penalty was awarded from which Gala made no mistake.

With 21 minutes gone, Waverley drew level. Luke Cooper was on target after being set up by a pass from Taylor Hope.

With both sides playing good football, the match continued at a lively pace and Gala duly struck again.

Waverley bounced back to equalise when Liam Gellaitry steered the ball into the net with his head on meeting a corner-kick. Gala, however, went on to add a third goal
and take full honours.

McConnell commented: “I was pleased with our performance. We were up against a good Gala side but we were as good as them and deserved a better result.”
