Hawick Waverley hit the South of Scotland Cup trail this afternoon against high-flying Chirnside at Wilton Lodge Park, writes John Slorance.
Fresh from their 14-0 demolition of St Boswells in Saturday’s friendly match – in which Liam Lavery bagged seven goals, with Scott Craig adding a hat-trick, and strikes from Taylor Hope, Darren Munro, Peter Gellaitry and Steven Sharkey (penalty) – Waverley go into tomorrow’s clash brimming with confidence.
Manager Bruce Hughes said: “The friendly game against St Boswells was a good workout for us, and we were obviously a bit rusty after the holiday break.
“We’re now looking forward to the Chirnside match. They’re top of the league and we are in second place. We’ve already played them in the league and it was a 1-1 draw, so we know what to expect. It’s nip and tuck between us, so it could be quite a game.”
Hughes continued: “It’s the South of Scotland Cup which is a big competition. However, regardless of what cup it is, or if it’s a league game or a friendly, we treat all our games the same.
“We just want to win, and that’s what we’ll be looking to do on Saturday.
“A cup victory would be a good way for us to start the New Year.”
