Rovers denied by late Melrose strike

A goal in the closing stages of Saturday’s game robbed Legion Rovers of the full three Border Amateur Division ‘C’ points.

The Wilton Lodge Park men began in an enterprising manner and edged ahead when Andrew McFarlane found the net with a well-struck drive.

Rovers continued to look the part and after receiving a Chay Caldwell pass, McFarlane waltzed round the Melrose keeper to shoot home.

Melrose pulled a goal back before half-time.

Following the changeover, though, Rovers struck for a third time. The ever-ready McFarlane completing his hat-trick after being set up by John Shankie.

Rovers were in the driving seat only to be knocked off the road when Melrose went on to score twice. The home side’s final goal coming minutes from the finish.

Talking of his team’s performance, Rovers manager Alex Caldwell said: “We took our foot off the gas not just once but twice. We should have put the game to bed early on as we were well on top and the match was there to be won. It ended up being a disappointing result for us but hopefully we’ll have learnt from this.”
