Hawick Legion 3
Hawick Legion Legends 1
THE line-up included Deke Gordon, famed for the many penalties that fell his way as he tumbled in the box.
Cameron ‘Tam’ Gibson, remembered for his barnstorming runs. Davie Amos, not to be forgotten for his ability to play in any position; and Stuart Renton, well etched in the history books for his calm, quiet temperament.
They were all back, and others as well.
Hawick Legion players of yesteryear turned out in a special match at Wilton Lodge Park last Friday night to kick-off the football club’s 60th anniversary celebrations.
It was a game in which Legion Legends faced a squad from the current crop of Legion and Legion Rovers squads.
At the end of it all, it was the Legion of 2013 who took the honours,
Legion scored the only goal of a keenly fought first half, during which both sides had their moments, when Gavin Brady stuck away a Jory Robertson cross.
Highlights of a second period which brought about a wave of substitutions by both teams were two magnificent saves from Legends keeper Stuart Oliver.
Oliver first thwarted Callum Hope with a brilliant stop and then excelled again in somehow managing to tip a netbound John Shankie drive onto the upright.
Legion, however, did find the net when Hope cut in from the right to net with a chipped show.
Two minutes later, Ally Colville put Legion further ahead with a cracker.
The Legends reduced the deficit with a Mark Philbin penalty and were robbed of another when a Chris Gardner shot his the post.
