Stow 1

Waverley pulled out the stops to gain a creditable Border Amateur Division ‘A’ win over a Stow side who have been tipped to do well this season.

The first half was a hard, even affair that brought about few scoring chances or goalmouth incidents.

A goal did not arrive until just before the interval when Waverley edged ahead. Peter Gellaitry hitting a cross over the face of the goalmouth and in attempting to clear the danger, a Stow defender put the ball into his own net.

Waverley’s joy was shortlived, however, and within minutes Stow got on level terms with a cross-cum-shot that sailed high into the net.

The second half saw close calls at both ends but Waverley notched the only goal when Scott Craig broke through to chip a shot over the head of the Stow keeper to earn the Wilton Lodge men the honours.

Speaking of the game, Waverley’s Peter Gellaitry said: “Not a lot happened in the first half in the way of goals. There was only one in the second half but there was plenty going on and the score could well have been 5-4 for us at the finish. It was that sort of game and it ended up being a really good win for us.”
