Although the heavy underfoot conditions were all against good football, this Border Amateur ‘C’ Division game turned out to be an entertaining affair.

The two respective sides got on with the job in hand, gave their all and emerged with a lot of credit.

Rovers broke the deadlock with five minutes of the first half remaining when John Shankie fired home from close range after Michael Moir had flicked on a long throw-in from Jordan Caldwell.

Prior to this, Rovers had been denied a goal when the Lauder keeper put up the shutters with a brilliant save from a Moir header following a Caldwell throw-in.

At the other end, stand-in Rovers keeper Tony Craggs, who normally plays outfield, showed his mettle by twice thwarting Lauder with excellent stops.

The hosts scored the only goal of the second half by snatching an equaliser with only two minutes of the game remaining with a shot that was deflected into the net by Rovers’ Clinton Sharkey.

Summing up the match, Rovers manager Alex Caldwell said: “A draw was a fair enough result. It was end-to-end stuff and both sides had chances. The pitch was very muddy but the two teams played well and got stuck in.”
