Legion came near to causing an upset in this Waddell Cup encounter in giving an excellent all-round display.

Andrew McFarlane put Legion ahead with a fine goal on the quarter-hour mark.

Facing formidable opposition in ‘A’ Division outfit Leithen Rovers, Legion then added to their tally when a slick passing move involving Davie Fraser and Jamie Dickson ended in Callum Hope drilling a shot into the net.

After Dickson had came near to notching a third, Legion had a stonewall penalty turned down.

With five minutes of the first period left, Leithen reduced the leeway.

Four minutes later, the Innerleithen side equalised.

Early in the second period, Rovers edged ahead.

Showing plenty of character, Legion came rallying back and Hope, Scott, Duncan and Liam Lavery all came near to scoring.

Leithen, however, went on to rattle away a fourth.

Legion assistant player/manager Tony Craggs said of matters: “We were the outsiders and a lot of folk didn’t expect us to win but we came close to doing this. We played very well and were as good as Leithen Rovers. The players did themselves proud and deserved to get something out of the game.”
