Two goals in extra time earned United a place in the second round of the South of Scotland Cup.

With most of the action confined to midfield, the first half brought about few scoring chances.

Following the changeover, Aaron Swailes almost put United ahead with a thundering shot that hit the bar.

After Charlie Mitchell had rescued United when clearing a net-bound shot off the line, the Tangerines were awarded a penalty following the upending of Swailes. Kevin Strathdee, however, blasted the spot-kick over the bar.

The cup tie duly went into extra time and during the first period United keeper Dean Fry put up the shutters with two superb saves.

In the second period, United struck gold with two top-notch strikes.

Swailes was first to hit the back of the net after weaving his way out of four challenges.

Kevin Strathdee then made amends for his penalty miss in finding the net with a well-struck drive from the edge of the box.

Commenting on his side’s triumph, United manager Geo Shepherd said: “I couldn’t fault a single United player. The entire side played well from start to finish and it was a brilliant win for us.”
