RICKY MacAuley and Craig Johnston are to make their semi-pro mixed martial arts debuts next Saturday.

The pair, who train out of the Twindragons MMA Academy at the high school, will feature at Cage Carnage 8 in the Swallow Hilltop Hotel in Carlisle.

Craig will be facing European fighter Rob Mnich at 70kg, while Ricky will be up against local Carlisle fighter Carl Dobson at 79kg.

Both have been training hard for the last few weeks under coach Darren Johnstone, who runs the club.

Darren told the Hawick News this week: “All of our fighters are visiting and training at full-time gyms in Carlisle in preparation for their fights which will be a feast of entertainment, with a strong card featuring WIW lightweight champion Jordan Desborough and pro fighter Andy Plimmer.

“The scene of martial arts in the Borders is growing in popularity by the week. Although still in its infancy, I’m sure after our boys win in Carlisle we will be put straight on the map as a force to be reckoned with.

“We have forthcoming shows all over in the next year and there will be more guys making their cage debuts this year.

“The ultimate goal is to bring a promotion to the Borders as ticket sales would be in great demand, but with anything putting on a show costs a lot of money.”

Tickets, priced £25, are available from the fighters or from Darren at or contact 07584043412.
