Paterson and his puzzling accusation

In reply to Councillor Davie Paterson’s comment in last week’s paper that a donation from my funfair to Hawick Reivers Festival was “tantamount to bribery”, I would like to make the following points.

My original application to Scottish Borders Council in November 2014 stated that I would be happy to give a donation to the festival, on top of the rent to the Common Good Fund. This was made as a goodwill gesture.

Also, in my 26 years of trading I have, as well as paying rent, made a donation to the events which we attend, examples of which include Haddington Festival, Newtongrange Miners’ Gala Day, Melrose Crichton Cup and Anstruther RNLI Gala Day to name just a few.

After all the donations I have made over the years I have never been accused of bribery and don’t understand how Councillor Paterson can come to the conclusion that my Hawick Reivers Festival donation would be any different to the above.
