Wheelhouse buoyed by commitment to town’s regeneration

HAWICK MSP Paul Wheelhouse has welcomed the Cabinet Secretary for Infrastructure and Capital Investment’s commitment to regeneration in Hawick.

During question time in the Scottish Parliament, the SNP politician asked Cabinet Secretary, Alex Neil MSP, to confirm the support provided for community led regeneration, mentioning Hawick in particular.

Mr Neil offered to meet with Scottish Borders Council and relevant agencies in order to further identify what support can be given for regeneration in the region.

Mr Wheelhouse said: “I am pleased Alex Neil recognises the challenges facing many communities in the South of Scotland and in particular the work needing done in Hawick.

“As I stated during my question a recent study by the Scottish Agricultural College identified Hawick as amongst the ten most vulnerable towns to public sector job losses. It is, therefore, my aim to minimise the impact this could have in the area given the economic potential for Hawick.

“The resurgent textiles sector could provide a catalyst for destination tourism.”
