Trio of exciting exhibitions on display at Textile Towerhouse

IT’S all change for the autumn season at Borders Textile Towerhouse, with three new and exciting exhibitions opening.

On the Catwalk – ‘New Designers’ showcases selected collections by the most recent design graduates from Heriot- Watt University’s School of Textiles and Design based in Galashiels.

‘Water Driven’ looks at how Wilton Dam supplied power to Hawick’s woollen mills, from their origins in the late 18th century to their decline at the end of the 20th century.

And the fine workmanship of local mill employees is celebrated through garments on display. Programmes and menus tell of mill picnics and social evenings of the past, while finely engraved bill heads are a reminder of long-gone buildings.

The exhibition continues in nearby Heritage Hub with a look at the history of Tower Mill, which features the only surviving waterwheel in Hawick.

And in the Futures Gallery, ‘Living the Dream & Pearl of Great Price’ is the title of an exhibition of work by Berwickshire-based textile artist Jo Simpson.
