Traders in dark over Howegate closure

Scottish Water has apologised after failing to tell local traders that
the Howegate would be closed to vehicles last Thursday.

When we contacted the utility company to ask why shopkeepers hadn’t been notified, a spokesperson would only say: “We appointed a contractor to carry out an essential ironworks repair on our behalf. We apologise for any
inconvenience that was caused.”

Grant Archibald, proprietor of Hutton Butchers at 16 Howegate, said: “Nobody ever came into the shop to say the road was being closed, but seemingly there had been a notice in the paper. Things were obviously a lot quieter because people couldn’t get up the road in their cars.”

Michelle Gourlay, co-proprietor at bakers G. Harrow & Son, 19 Howegate, said: “We didn’t know anything about it until a customer came into the shop on the Wednesday to ask if the shop would be shut on the Thursday.”
