MORE than 20 per cent of central area retail premises in Hawick are lying empty.

And Hawick Community Councillors are set to meet with some of the region’s top politicians in a bid to halt further decline.

The grim figures were discussed at a recent meeting of Hawick Community Council and it has prompted community council chairperson Marion Short (pictured) to invite MSPs John Lamont and Paul Wheelhouse, as well as Michael Moore MP, to visit the town in January to discuss the issue.

Speaking this week, Mrs Short said: “Like many others in Hawick, I am concerned at the demise of local shops, particularly if they cannot afford to rent and then pay rates on High Street properties.

“On that basis, I wrote to both MSPs and our MP requesting a meeting on the High Street so they can relay the concerns of the community council to the Scottish Government.”

All have agreed to visit Hawick on Saturday, January 18, and will meet with Mrs Short, community council members Cameron Knox and Jim Little, and SBC Councillor Zandra Elliot.
