AN URGENT appeal has gone out for volunteers to help in this weekend’s town clean-up.

The event has been organised by Hawick Community Council in conjunction with Burnfoot Community Council and Scottish Borders Council.

And although youngsters from the high school, Escape Youth Cafe and local Scouts have all signed up to take part, Hawick Community Council chairperson Marion Short said this week they were still lacking in numbers.

She said: “We just want as many people to come along as possible. I’m disappointed in the lack of response from clubs and organisations in the town.

“I sent letters to all the clubs and groups and I’ve had very few replies.”

The clean-up starts on Sunday in the Common Haugh and will run from 10am to 1pm. Specific areas for clearing will be identified, and bags, gloves and tools to pick up the rubbish will be supplied by the local authority.

Mrs Short added: “We are still looking for volunteers of any age to come and help.”
