Teri parliamentarian to call it a day after 30 years

HAWICK-born MSP Peter Peacock is to stand down at the Scottish election next year.

The 58-year-old Labour politician has represented the Highlands and Islands constituency since 1999 and was Minister for Education and Young People, a post he resigned from in November 2006 due to ill-health.

A former leader of Highland Council, Mr Peacock said he was keen to seek “new challenges”.

“At the coming Scottish election I would be entering my 30th consecutive year in elected office and I feel it is time for a change and to give myself some new challenges in life.

“It has all been hugely rewarding, but there is a time to move on, and that time has come. As this chapter of my work life closes, so I look forward to another opening, using my experience of public life to full effect.”
