LOCAL engineering firm Turnbull & Scott could be about to move into the former Slumberdown factory in Burnfoot (pictured).

The Hawick News understands that negotiations are at an advanced stage and the switch could be made later this year.

And that could open the door for further development of Commercial Road.

Turnbull and Scott’s have made no secret of the fact they were looking to find alternative premises following the £400,000 purchase of two businesses last July.

The engineering outfit acquired Commercial Electric Heat Ltd (CEH) and Tykel Ltd, which saw the creation of seven new jobs.

Sites throughout the town and the Borders are believed to have been looked at, but it now appears as though the vacant building on the edge of Burnfoot Industrial Estate will be their new home.

The factory has been empty since bedding giant Slumberdown was placed in administration last summer.

The impending move has been warmly welcomed by local councillors.

Zandra Elliot told the Hawick News: “They have a need to expand their premises to suit their extra business and I am delighted that the premises for that expansion are available in Hawick.”

Stuart Marshall said: “If this move goes ahead then I would welcome it wholeheartedly for many reasons.

“Mainly it would secure jobs and at the same time put the lights back on in the former Slumberdown factory, as well as hopefully allowing more land to become available for further development of the Commercial Road area.”

While Jock Houston added: “It’s always a sign of confidence in the future when a company moves to new premises and it will remove the dispiriting spectacle of the former Slumberdown premises detiorating and spreading gloom. It also creates a development opportunity on Commercial Road.”
