Sentencing due for sex case teacher

A biology teacher who admits sexually assaulting two pupils will find out this whether he will be jailed.

Andrew Beattie, 61, was arrested in May 2010 after more than 1,300 indecent images of children were found on his home computer. The victims then came forward to report the assaults which took place at Selkirk High in the 1990s.

Sentence has been frequently delayed to allow pyschologists to give evidence on the likeli -hood of him reoffending. The latest hearing at Jedburgh Sheriff Court on Monday heard Beattie was described as being a low/medium risk – the second lowest category – of committing another sexual offence, which was at odds with another expert who said the risk was far higher.

Defence advocate Shelagh McCall then gave a plea in mitigation, before Sheriff Donald Corke deferred sentence until February 29.
