The new season opened with a visit from Edinburgh stamp shop owner Robert Murray who gave a talk entitled ‘From Behind the Counter’.

Relating his experiences of some 40 years in the business, he told the local philatelists how, at the age 13, he first purchased a box of stamps at auction for £1.50, took out the one he wanted and sold the remainder to schoolmates at a profit.

Initially working in a general auction house in the city learning the trade covering furniture, paintings, books and stamps, at the age of 19 he resigned, opening his own stamp shop in Edinburgh – the same premises he occupies all these years later.

Details of the business included all aspects of the philatelic trade, his regular auctions and his many, some highly amusing, experiences with customers.
