Referendum takes centre stage at café

“Yes, No, Don’t Know?” will be the question local theatre-goers are posed this Sunday, as Damascus Drum plays host to a national theatre event themed around the question of the upcoming referendum.

As part of the National Theatre of Scotland’s “Five Minute Theatre” scheme, the café will be hosting a series of five-minute plays, each exploring a different aspect of Scottish independence.

With offerings written by local playwrights including Jules Horne, Thomas Clark, Tom Murray and Sara Clark, and casts provided by Borders-based theatre company Firebrand, the afternoon promises to be a thought-provoking journey into both sides of the referendum debate.

Organiser Sara Clark said “We’re very fortunate to have so much writing and acting talent in the Borders, and a national event like this is a real opportunity to put Hawick on the theatrical map.

“The plays will be filmed and streamed on the National Theatre’s website as part of the event, so it’s a great chance to participate in the independence debate at a national level.”

The event starts at 2:30pm this Sunday. Entry is free but space may be limited.
