PLANS are gathering pace to erect an information board at the recently unveiled Bill McLaren bust in Wilton Lodge Park.

It was revealed this week that text about the renowned BBC rugby commentator, who died in 2010, has been compiled by lifelong friend Alan McCredie.

Hawick Community Councillor Rob Brydon said: “It [the board] would be in the shape of a book as we felt this was appropriate.”

Hawick and Hermitage councillor Ron Smith, who is looking into a similar information board for the Horse monument, said it could cost in the region of £1,000 to £1,300, although funding could be secured through the council’s small schemes budget.

Community council chairperson Marion Short told a meeting this week: “I think it would finish the project off nicely if there was information available. I think an awful lot of people would find it very interesting right up next to the statue.”

The bronze bust, which was made by Beltane Studios in Peebles, cost £11,500 and was paid for through various fund-raising initiatives, donations and public subscriptions.
