The “deteriorating” wall to the rear of the Royal Mail sorting office in St George’s Lane is to be repaired as a “matter of urgency”.
That was the pledge from Ewan Doyle, the Hawick flood protection scheme manager, who told Teviot and Liddesdale Area Forum that there was funding in place for the works. However, when pressed by Councillor Stuart Marshall for an assurance that the repairs would be carried out in the summer, Mr Doyle said the council hadn’t looked at that level of detail yet. “We’ll be in discussions with the Post Office very shortly to look at access,” he added.
Councillor Marshall said he had seen the Teviot in full spate three times since December and the deterioration in the wall when the river went up. It needed to be sorted as a priority, he said.
The £150,000 cost of repairs will be met by an advance of capital from the Hawick flood protection project.
