A banned driver who stole fuel from a local garage, was jailed for eight months.

George McLeod of Wellfield Road, admitted stealing fuel from Morrison’s Mart Street garage in Hawick on January 25.

He also admitted driving while disqualified and without insurance.

The 43-year-old, said to have an appalling driving record, was also banned from the roads for four years.

Sheriff Donald Corke told McLeod, “You have an appalling record for dishonesty and road traffic offences, including nine previous convictions for driving while disqualified and 29 for theft or fraud.

“You clearly have no respect for the safety or property of others, and custody is inevitable,” he concluded.
