Pesco’s set to axe more workers

Local mill Peter Scott & Co is set to shed more workers, writes Sarah Williamson.

The Hawick News has been informed by a local source, who did not want to be
named, that the jobs axe is about to fall again at the Buccleuch Street factory – after we reported last month that two workers had taken volutary redundancy, and four had resigned.

But bosses are again remaining tight-lipped after we contacted the mill earlier this week, seeking clarification on the latest news that four more jobs are “at risk”.

Last month, candidates were being sought for voluntary redundancy, with the appeal resulting in four coming forward.

However, two were turned down. Later that same week, four employees decided to leave the company.

The Hawick News also understands that much of the manufacturing for the South-Korean owned Gloverall firm – best known for making duffle coats and which took over Peter Scott in 2011 – is now taking place in Bulgaria.

At the time of going to press, no-one from the mill had responded to our request for a comment.
