1973 DESPITE objections from the local Chamber of Trade and Mr Alex Smith, jeweller, at the half-yearly Licensing Court in the Burgh Courtroom, Ladbrokes the Bookmakers were granted a licence for shop premises at 45 High Street, in place of their existing office in Walter’s Wynd.

1983 A TOTAL of 60 Peter Scott employees, about a quarter of the workforce, are to be made redundant today. Peter Scott, the largest independently owned knitwear mill in the town, will shed 50 of the 200 employees at their Buccleuch Street premises, and a further ten of the 37 workers at the Kelso branch.

1993 “HANDS off our Post Office” was the blunt message conveyed to postal chiefs at a stormy public meeting in the Town Hall when townsfolk had their say on controversial proposals to move the main Post Office in Bridge Street to the new £13million Safeway Superstore, nearing completion on the former Auction Mart site.

2003 CALLS to keep the current one-way system on High Street in operation permanently have been met with a luke warm response. The ambitious plan was aired at a community council meeting this week.
